Day Six - Don't Miss The Sign
Verse For The Day
Luke 2:12
‘This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’
‘This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’
Soon after passing my driving test, I very nearly turned the wrong way onto a dual-carriageway, having completely missed the blue and white sign with the arrow pointing left! Thankfully, I realised just in the nick of time (prompted by my passenger) and changed my course.
In Luke chapter 2, an angel of the Lord appears to the shepherds as they’re keeping watch over their flocks, to tell them a Saviour has been born. The angel goes on to say, ‘This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ (Luke 2:12)
Why was this to be a sign to the shepherds?
A manger was a trough that animals fed from. Why would the baby Jesus (or any baby for that matter) be found in a trough, amongst livestock?! If Jesus was laid in an ordinary crib, the shepherds would likely have passed Him off as an ordinary baby boy. But He wasn’t, He was Christ the Lord, who had been sent to save the world and the world needed to know He was coming for them. A baby in a manger made no sense - so this sign from God was sure to get the shepherd’s attention and set them on the right course.
When waiting on God for something promised, it can be easy to overlook what He’s doing. Don’t miss the sign… don’t dismiss what He’s doing in your life because it’s out of the ordinary, because it doesn’t make sense to you or because you’re concerned others won’t understand it. God often does things in extra-ordinary ways, things that go against the societal norms and trends and there’s a reason for that…to point people to Himself.
Everything God does is for His glory and the building of His Kingdom.
After hurrying off to Bethlehem and finding the baby Jesus exactly where the angel said they would, in the manger, the shepherds spread the word about Him. All who heard were amazed and the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God. It was this very sign from God, that began to open the world’s eyes to the coming of the prophesied Messiah. I, for one, am grateful that the shepherds didn’t miss the sign.
Friend, today, take a hold of that which God has revealed to you, you just never know the impact it may have on you and those around you.
