In 1992, as the Church was praying on the Hillcrest school playing
field, in preparation for the forthcoming tent crusade, Mark Burchell
heard the audible voice of God say "BUY ME THAT LAND", as he looked
towards the vacant 2 acre site situated next door.
After years of negotiations and prayer the Church eventually purchased
the site in 1998 for £150,000.
Sensing that the site was for the purpose of building a new Church,
Mark met with the architects responsible for designing, what was then,
the newly commissioned Waterfront at the Merry Hill centre.
Following months of design work by LEVEL 7 the New Church plans were
formally approved by Dudley MBC in 2003, but because of growing costs
along with the passing of time the £4.5 million budget became
unworkable and the plans were put on the back burner.
The people of the Church never gave up hope that one day a new church
could be built and so continued to faithfully give into the building
fund in the strong belief that the Church would soon need to call on
the cash as a new phased plan was worked on.
In 2008, the newly redesigned and phased plan was presented to Dudley
planners for the second time and given immediate approval alongside
glowing recommendations for the work of the Church and the design of
the building. This time around, the budget was set at around £2million
for phase one with an overall budget of £3.5million for the completed
complex.
In January 09, the Church appointed McPhillips Ltd fromTelford to
carry out the construction work.
MARCH 30th 2009 is now officially set as the start date on site.
PHASE ONE sees the construction of the 850 seat amphitheater style
auditorium complete with a 75ft foyer, toilets, baby changing room,
editing suite, coffee bar/ bookshop area along with a choir room and
green room.
The 9 month build will see a potential GRAND OPENING just ONE WEEK
BEFORE CHRISTMAS '09.
The total cost of the project is building solely met by the
outstanding and generous giving of the people of Champions Church and
is not reliant on any funding or grants from other bodies.
